SUMMER CAME WITHOUT WARNING – Nathaniel Frankland

Summer Came Without Warning

She’s the blistering midday sun,
mid-season,
watching over me with a glare so
hot she makes my skin
prickle…
tickles me from the inside
out,
meanwhile on the horizon,
I can hear the warble of an
ice cream van rising to a
crescendo –
an eerily off-key rendition of
Greensleeves ringing in my ears…
and before I know it,
I’m 99 pence lighter,
hastily sinking my teeth into a
rainbow-coloured
iced lollipop!
an animal stepping on a
bear trap –
jaw snaps…
mouth claps…
stopped dead in my
tracks.
And all I wanted was to feel at ease,
but instead I got a bite of summer
sabotaged by
brain freeze.
